Regular visitors to this site at onlinecasino.ie will know that we attempt to keep our readers informed as to what is happening in the world of online casinos, particularly any new Irish casino news which may be of interest. This month’s casino news is specifically related to Irish based online casino sites but does affect the potential performance of several online casino operators which provide online casino games to Irish players. For many months now some of the major online casino operators have been criticising the new online gambling tax rules proposed by the British government, particularly those companies who have based their online operations offshore. Many of our major online casino companies are currently based in Gibraltar, but the new tax regime will require tax to be paid in the country where the casino games players are located rather than where the company is based and will therefore almost certainly increase the tax liability of all these online casino operators. The latest development in this story has come from Gibraltar itself, with the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association applying for a judicial review of these proposals. It has to be said that William Hill and Ladbrokes, both based in Gibraltar have decided not to support this application even though both companies have expressed their opposition to the new tax and licensing regime in the past, but both Bwin Party and Betfair are supporting the application. The Gibraltar government is also very concerned that some of these online gambling companies may decide to relocate away from Gibraltar rather than face the prospect of operating within two different tax regimes. This would clearly have serious consequences for the economy of Gibraltar which relies heavily on the income they receive from these online casino operators. We await the outcome of the legal process.
