Tips for Playing Caribbean Stud Poker

We have covered the rules of Caribbean Stud and how to play the game in our “Casino Game Rules” section but here we would like to give you a few tips to increase your chances of winning. Firstly, ignore the fact that the dealer must have a qualifying hand for you to win, this has no relevance to the way you should play. To raise on a poor hand in the hope that the dealer does not have a qualifying hand is a poor strategy, you are risking three times your ante (ante plus your bet/raise) and if you are right you get back four times your ante (your ante wins at 1:1 and your raise is a push). In odds terms this is 1:3 on which is not great. The next simple piece of advice is to ignore the progressive jackpot. The stake may seem small and the possible return may seem high but the odds are against you. For example the jackpot may stand at $250,000 which seems attractive but to win that you need to have been dealt a royal flush in 5 cards and the chances of that happening are nearly 650,000:1.

The real and only question therefore is when to bet/raise. If you don’t raise then you fold, there is no other choice. There is a very simple strategy that can be followed which says raise if you have Ace, King, Jack or better, otherwise fold. The thinking behind this is that you have three chances of beating the minimum qualifying hand of the dealer. In a slightly more complicated strategy you can take into account the dealers face up card. This strategy agrees with the previous strategy in that if you have a pair or better you raise, if you have less than an Ace, King you fold so the only hand to consider is when you have Ace, King. The first thing to watch for is whether the dealers face up card is the same as one of your cards. If it is, this reduces the chances of the dealer having a pair so raise. If the dealer is showing an Ace or a King this also reduces the chances of him having a pair as you already have an Ace and a King in your hand so as long as your third card is a Queen or possible even a Jack you raise. If you have less than Ace, King, Jack and none of the above apply we would suggest you fold.

No strategy is perfect or guarantees a profit but by applying some logic you should increase your chances.
