Roman Abramovich does not gamble

What a pleasant surprise to hear that somebody famous is making the headlines because they do not have a gambling problem. In a recent incident none other than Roman Abramovich the billionaire Russian owner of Chelsea Football Club accepted substantial damages and a public apology from an Italian newspaper group after they accused him of suffering substantial gambling debts and endangering the relationship with his long term partner Dasha Zhukova. Mr Abramovich sued the newspaper group, Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso for an article that appeared in the newspaper La Repubblica in which it was suggested that Abramovich was forced to hand over a luxury yacht to cover his losses at a poker game and that he was now gambling online. John Kelley, his solicitor said “The article would have been understood to mean that he had such a serious gambling problem that he was not only jeopardising his relationship with his long-term partner Dasha Zhukova, who had been forced to issue him an ultimatum that he either give up playing poker or she would end their relationship, but he was also seriously risking his financial stability and had already been forced to liquidate assets, through the sale of one of his yachts, in order to cover his heavy gambling debts.” “Regrettably, these allegations were not put to Mr Abramovich or his representatives before publication. If they had been, the defendant would have been advised of the utter falsity of the allegations.”

It seems unbelievable to us that even if he did lose some money in a poker game he would have to sell a yacht, after all he is worth billions not millions. Mr Abramovich is reportedly donating the undisclosed damages to charity.
