Australia’s ban on online gaming could be coming to an end

The ban on online gambling in Australia could soon be ended based on the first draft of a review by the Australian Federal Productivity Commission released recently. In line with many other countries they have determined that a ban is not working, could be of questionable legality and leaves consumers unprotected. Around 4% of the gaming industry is believed to be online and that is whilst it is illegal. The proposal is to use licenses and regulations to create “managed liberalisation” but at the same time have strong “harm minimization measures” to guard children and problem gamblers and to prevent money laundering and fraud. Exactly what measures might be taken is unknown but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that giving people the choice to set limits on how much time and money they can spend on gambling is a useful tool and is already available on most good sites. The Australian banks are also requesting a tool so that they can step in where problem gambling is apparent.

The next stage for the draft is a public hearing in November and December and the final report should be submitted by February 26th 2010.
