William Hill is the latest to report reduced profits

William Hill has announced its results for 2009 and to quote Ralph Topping the Chief Executive it has been a “rotten” year blaming as others have done “rotten” football results (which means the favourites won and the punters won, no problem there then!) and the cancellation of many horse race meetings and a general decline due to the economy. He said “While we would normally expect fluctuations in sporting results during a year, these were more extreme in 2009 than we had experienced previously. William Hill releases fourth quarter results

Not so long ago, in fact just at the beginning of the football season, bookmakers were blaming the results of the Premiership matches as being the cause of reduced profits when just four of the first 66 matches ended in a draw but now William Hill has reported improved profits up 6% in the fourth quarter thanks to surprise defeats for Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea as well as the ongoing poor form of Liverpool. Simon Lane, the finance director said “The results weren’t so good for the punters, with the big teams not going to form”. Gross win margins were back at the 17 to 18% level and the shares rose 6.3p to 191.9p. 2010 has however got off to a poor start with the weather cancelling many of the racing fixtures which will reduce turnover and profits. All in all the 2009 results are expected to produce operating profits of £250 million which is up approximately 4% with the online business up 35% after a strong fourth quarter. Analysts suggest that this was just a little less than they expected. Chairman Charles Scott who joined the board in 2002 before the flotation will be stepping down at the end of the year but commented that the business was in “excellent shape”. We await with interest to see if other bookmakers have the same experience with football results affecting their business.

William Hill strengthens management team

William Hill is in the news again by announcing two significant changes to the senior management team including a new position of Brand and Marketing Director reporting directly to CEO Ralph Topping and responsible for development of the William Hill brand across the whole business. The new incumbent is Mr Kristof Fahey comes from being Vice President International Marketing at Yahoo Inc. Mr Fahey has spent several years in the communications industry with companies such as Orange and Blackberry. Mr Topping said “ we are delighted to welcome Kristof as the latest appointment in our continuing development of the senior management team”.

The second appointment follows the decision by Finance Director Simon Lane to step down after four years in the post during which time he oversaw the recent £300 million bond issue. He is expected to receive in the region of £1 million in pay and other entitlements. Taking his place will be Mr Neil Cooper who is currently Finance Director at Bovis Homes Group plc. It is believed that Mr Cooper has yet to agree a leaving date from Bovis but Mr Lane will continue in his post until he arrives. In a statement William Hill Chairman Charles Scott said “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Simon for his important contribution to William Hill, including his significant efforts in helping to make our balance sheet much stronger during 2009”.
