We reported only last week that Paddy Power was pushing the boundaries again with its money back advertisement featuring partially sighted footballers kicking a cat into a tree after mistaking it for the ball and wouldn’t you know it, there have been more than 400 complaints to the advertising watchdog. The advert which was created by Big Al’s Creative Emporium was approved by Clearcast which is an organization that looks at advertisements before broadcasting and is part of Paddy Powers campaign in the run up to the World Cup in South Africa. However the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) is now investigating whether the advertisement breaks the advertising code after receiving complaints that it was offensive in the way it portrayed partially sighted people and might encourage cruelty to animals. In their defence Paddy Power went out of its way to ensure that genuinely sight impaired people were used rather than actors and the ad even included Ajmal Ahmed who is captain of the English squad playing in this summer’s Blind World Football Championship but it was pointed out that TV viewers would not be aware that those featured were genuinely blind. Paddy Power is no stranger to controversy and in fact an earlier ad featuring four actors in wheelchairs never made it to the screen and was withdrawn on advice from Clearcast. The advertisement is targeting the upcoming World Cup and as usual with Paddy Power’s advertising the commercial pushes certain boundaries and the bookie used actual blind footballers rather than actors. Several of the players set to represent England in this summer’s World Blind Football Championships of which the commercial’s main protagonist, Ajmal Ahmed, is an England captain.

Blind footballers actually react to the sound of a bell within the ball when playing but when the ball rolls out of play and through a fence there is a small problem especially when a cat arrives on the field with a bell around its neck. The ad obviously suggests that the cat is mistaken for the ball with dire consequences but Paddy Power are quick to assure cat lovers everywhere that no cats were harmed in the making of the commercial. The point of the commercial is to promote Paddy Power’s Money-Back Specials – where customers can have their bets returned to them even if they don’t win and continues the ‘nothing we can do about that’ theme of the bookie’s recent office email and changing room ads.

Paddy Power himself said: “As with our betting we like to have fun with our ads. Thankfully for the cat we got the shot we needed in the first take!”

When is Roulette not Roulette? The answer is when it is Paddy Power “Golden Clover”. This is an intriguing game based on roulette in that there is a rolling ball but instead of the numbers being arranged around the perimeter of a wheel they are in the shape of a shamrock. The betting placement is very similar to roulette but the main difference is the number of possible outcomes for the ball and the odds which are paid. In this game there are 40 numbers (1 through 36 plus two zeros plus two x’s) versus 37 in European Roulette (1 through36 plus zero). You can place your bets on single numbers, pairs, groups of 4 or 6, columns, 1 to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36 etc. just as in roulette but with an added twist that you can bet each of the four quadrants of the shamrock which is effectively 9 numbers. On the surface of it the odds are far better than roulette but as we are an advisory portal we must point out that all is not quite as it might at first seem. At first glance odds of 41:1 for a single number plus your winning stake back when there are only 40 numbers looks a much better bet than Roulette where the odds are 35:1 plus your stake back for a single number but here is the crunch. If you study the shamrock carefully you will notice that the ball actually passes the zero and the x’s twice versus only once for any other number. This effectively means that there are 44 possible outcomes for the ball to come to rest rather than 40 which makes the odds very marginally worse than European roulette. The difference is very small so this is not a reason not to try it for a change but you will see a lot more zeros and x’s coming up than you might at first expect. Cheltenham is over and apart from some fantastic racing and the fact that it was a poor one for most punters with not enough favourites coming in, the talk of the event was the Paddy Power sign that rather cheekily dominated the landscape and was erected without planning permission in farmers field on Cleve Hill. Paddy Power reportedly wanted to leave the sign there as a permanent feature but Tewkesbury Borough Council had different ideas and the sign has been removed over the weekend and no further action is expected. If you were unable to be at Cheltenham you may wonder what all the fuss was about; well the fuss was basically the size of the thing. Most people will know the “Hollywood” sign on the hill over Los Angeles and even if you haven’t seen it for real you will have seen it on TV or the movies; the Hollywood sign is 200 feet wide by 45 feet tall but the Paddy Power sign was a massive 270 feet wide by 50 feet tall. 50 feet by the way is as tall as 3 double decker buses on top of each other. If you are wondering what it takes to construct something of that size, it weighed 100 tons, had a crew of 60 people working on it and it was three years in the making. Paddy Power certainly keep coming up with different things but this was apparently one too far for the local council but we hope the bookmaker carries on with their entertaining.

Limerick’s Treaty Stone not being sold.

It is not April 1^st but that doesn’t stop some people publishing what can only be called mischievous gossip on Facebook. This one concerns the sale of the Limerick’s Treaty Stone to an unnamed casino in Atlantic City. The Treaty Stone gets its name from the fact that it was supposedly used for the signing of the Treaty of Limerick on October 3^rd 1691 which ended the war between supporters of William of Orange and the Jacobites. The stone which is limestone stands on a plinth in Limerick City which is sometimes known as the Treaty City.

The Facebook site suggested that the stone was to be sold to improve the City finances and provided contact details of the Mayors office. Despite categorical denials from City Manager Tom Mackey it has created quite a few reactions from members of the public including one who wrote “if this is all the Council can come up with to raise money it’s time for them to go” while others had no problem with the sale and even suggested that the Blarney Stone could go as well. Sinn Fein Councillor Maurice Quinlivan said he enjoyed a joke as much as the next man but was equally adamant that the stone is not being sold to a casino or anybody else and called the story fictitious.
